Engines

"The innards of a Rolls Royce engine seemed to me like the exposed organs of a body, vulnerable, disconnected from the system in which they are intended to function. Something which is supposed to be a source of power is now crying out in anguish. It seemed like a huge structure

or cathedral, with light streaming through it."

For Junko, the broken engine parts cry out to be reintegrated into the livings systems for which they were designed. She has included engines in her works over a period of more than 30 years - sometimes mixing them with the other themes

of roots and burls, and of birds.

The Engine is incorporated into works with many different media: pen, pencil, acrylic and different types of collage - some using the technique developed for the original Roots & Burl Series, and some using photographs and computer images carefully distorted and incorporated into the complicated compositions so characteristic of Junko's work
